It Works

Got a great price for the unit, Rock Bottom shipped it quickly. Was in the original box with all the correct paper work. Although refurbished came out of the box looking brand new. Make sure you register your device using Garmin's website. It will also upload new firmware and courses and then turn it on and let the new info load into the device before taking it out to the course.
Pros
  • The Positive:
  • The measurements are accurate. Isn't that what you buy it for? The screen is bright enough. I don't use some of the features like scoring because I have my own cart living on a private golf course with my own scorecard, so I can't review those features.
Cons
  • The negative:
  • I had a G6 for years before giving out, and I liked the size of it over this model. The G6 also had a couple of features this model does not have. Example, being able to advance the hole with a button.
  • Overall, I gave it 4 stars due to its smaller size, but it does what I bought it for, to measure distance accurately.

One of the best purchases I have made for my game

Small, compact, and accurate. Completely eliminates the guess work on distances to the pin. Tracks shot patterns, round history and measures shot distances, Multiple forms of scoring and can record up to 4 players per round. Long battery life and easy to learn touchscreen display.

Appears to work fine. Have only played one round with it but the yardages seem to be fairly accurate.

This was a replacement for my old Approach G5 that finally gave out. It looks nice. The screen is about 2/3 the size of the G5 and the unit is less than 1/2 the size. It has a rechargeable battery, but I couldnt find any current GPS units that take regular batteries (which I prefer so I can just leave batteries in my bag and not worry about recharging). Seems to have all the features of the G5 and I'll probably get used to the small screen. Also, synced with my cell phone..whatever that means. It's almost winter in the Northeast so probably won't use it til the spring. Maybe I'll update the review then.
Pros
  • Small.
  • Seems to have all the features you need.
Cons
  • Small

Garmin Golf- Approach G30 GPS
April 3, 2018
I had been using a Golf Buddy VS4 for years. I doubt they make that unit any longer! Thinking it was time to buy a better GPS unit I did quite a bit of research on all the available choices and decided to go with the Garmin Approach G30 unit. I like how compact it is and it has the features I was looking to acquire and how easy it is to use on the course. I mostly like the full color course mapping with the touch targeting feature. I use this feature a lot on par 5's, specifically for lay up shots-----no more guessing how far I should hit it to lay up to the yardage I want going into the green. The unit has no problem finding the course I'm at and it doesn't change holes at random like the Golf Buddy unit did. All and all a great unit for the money. I would buy it again and certainly recommend buying it if you are in the market for a new, compact and easy to use color GPS unit.
Pros
  • Compact
  • Easy to use
  • Color
  • Touch targeting feature
  • Easily get 2 rounds out of a charge
  • Doesn't break the bank
  • No subscription required
Cons
  • NONE

Great Device That Doesn't Require A Degree In Rocket Science To Use
November 29, 2017
Perfect size device that easily fits in the palm of your hand and has a useful amouñt òf information when out on the course. Syncs easily with the Garmin Connect App and their Tru Swing Golf Analyzer. Access to Tru Swing Metrics rìght from the G30 ìs really helpful when pĺaying so you can see what you are doing right or wrong after any shot that has the Tru Swing attached to the club. Screens are easy to navigate and the four còrners allow you access to all the info you need. Scorecard can record scores for a foursome and you can access the scorecard to adjusts scores at any time. Belt clip is handy but nòt ideal as it takes me a little to long to get it back in the clip. I bought there lanyard attachment so I can leave it on my beĺt and raise it to see the info I want. ÃŒ wear a Samsung Gear 3 smart watch so having a golf GPS watch ìs cumbersome and too small to be useful fòr my aging eyes. This is an excellent device that is unobtrusive, light and can actually provide battery life for more than 2 rounds. Rockbottom price and shipping were excellent and Garmin customer service is actually staffed with knowledgeable people who handle inquiries well. The hold time was rather lengthy at 25 minutes but using their leave a call back number made it painless. They called back before their announced hold time and that maķes ìt a pleasure rather than listening to hold music. Anyone looking for an alternative to a large handheld ĢPS or GPS watch should get one of these. As for using my smartphone, no way! Battery drain, data usage, possibility of losing it or damaging it makes it a poor substitutefor a dedicated device. Check the G30 Approach out. You will be pleasantly surprised and there are no subscriptions required for their updates.

After 2 Uses ... Great!
May 9, 2017
I have only used a few of the features on this GPS at this point, but I will update once I have used the rest. So far so good! The GPS recognition of closest course, distance recognition, and automatic hole advancement has been great this far.
